A small purple creature and a larger orange one argue over who is big and who is small, and the argument becomes a shouting match. A giant and some tiny parachuting creatures show up, which changes the picture. The creatures see things differently and go off to eat together.

What children see in the story

Each creature is sure of its own view until something new shows up that changes the picture; they let the new facts change their minds and end up walking off together.

Why it’s on these shelves

Open-mindedness
A small purple creature and a big orange one argue over who is big and who is small, and the shouting gets loud. When a giant and some tiny parachuters show up, they see size differently and go off to eat together.

Why pick it up?

The creatures revise how they see size and decide to eat together.

A note for parents

Kirkus categories include Children’s Concepts and say younger readers may need help with the size and perspective ideas. A close call on the concept rule; kept because it has characters, a turning point and a changed ending, and Kirkus calls the message quiet. The shouting is the book’s main behavior for about half its length. Kirkus calls it very funny; the teacher says her students recognized it from their own arguments. Perspectives is the nearer-looking shelf, but the creatures do not listen to each other; a surprise changes both views, so only open-mindedness is tagged.
